Internet safety is a now a big thing these days especially with all of our data being stored online.

We live in an age where everything is digital, whether it be banking, education, entertainment, you name it. While being digital has its benefits of accessibility and productivity, it has the negatives of constantly ensuring you protect your data. This blog will cover some tips to make sure you protect your privacy online and that your data is safe and secure.

If Something is Free, You Are the Product

You need to know that nothing in this world is literally free, especially on the internet. Social media, for example, seems to be free, but the price here is your information. Your essential info is given to advertisers to push ads of products you are more willing to purchase. There have been rumors and allegations of companies showing manipulative ads to sway your political opinions, all based on the personal data you provide them. Be mindful of what information you give and the reputation of the website you give it to.

Separate Login Emails From Communication Emails

The majority of online websites require you to log in using your email. This is good since you can reset your password using this email if you forget it. The trick here is never to share this email with anyone. If someone gets access to this email, they will reset all your passwords and potentially access your credit cards. You should have an email address that only you know; keep this email exclusive to account logins and bank accounts. Then create another email address that is known publicly for mailing lists, friends, work, etc…

Invest in a VPN to Protect Your Online Data

Using a VPN allows you to access content that may be locked in your country. It also provides you with security and encryption of your data.

A VPN means a virtual private network. You basically mask your IP address so that the service you use does not know where you are browsing from. Additionally, a VPN has data encryption features; this means that your data is put in a coded format to prevent hackers and attackers from accessing your data. It can protect your data from ISPs (Internet service providers) and even the government. VPNs have a lot more benefits, such as accessing country-specific content on Netflix and similar services. It can also save you money since some companies charge their online product based on the location you are in.

Settle Your Password Situation Once And For All

You need to be mindful about protecting your data online. All of our accounts and personal information lie behind passwords.

A password is a key to unlocking your online account. Your password needs to be complex enough so that it doesn’t easily get hacked while being simple enough so that you can remember it. It plays an important factor in protecting your privacy online. For this, we recommend 2 options. The first one is to use an online password manager; this application will generate strong passwords and save them for you. They also have an autofill feature to automatically fill in your password once you go to a sign-in page. The other option is to create your own password algorithm. It is a rule you create and apply for all passwords. An example rule could be the first letter of the app + the number of days you were born in + the first 2 letters of your month of birth + your favorite number + any symbol of your choice + last 2 letters of the app’s name. Once you understand your algorithm, you will never forget any password again while ensuring you have a secure password.

Doing all of these tips will not 100% guarantee the protection of your data, but it is a step in the right direction towards your privacy & safety online.
